What Excel won't let you name a sheet

When a rename is rejected, it is usually one of these rules:

RuleDetail
LengthMaximum 31 characters
Forbidden characters\\ / ? * [ ] :
No blank nameA sheet name cannot be empty
Unique namesTwo sheets in the same workbook can't share a name
⚠️ Beware of formulas: If formulas reference the old sheet name, they may break after renaming. Excel usually updates references automatically within the same workbook — but check any external links.

Common problems & fixes
