📖 Grammar Guide

Direct gives the speaker's exact words in quotes. Indirect (reported) tells what was said — no quotes, and the tense usually shifts back: am → was, is → was, will → would, can → could. Pronouns change too: "I" → he/she, "my" → his/her. The word "that" is often added (can be omitted).
