About This 2D Shapes Worksheet

This 2D shapes worksheet introduces Grades 1-2 students to basic geometric shapes: circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, and hexagons. Students identify and name shapes, count sides and corners, and sort shapes by their properties. The worksheet connects classroom geometry to the real world by asking students to find everyday objects that match each shape. Print on US Letter or A4. Answer key included.

What Students Will Learn

Students learn to distinguish shapes by their defining attributes: a triangle always has 3 sides and 3 corners, regardless of size or orientation. They practice the vocabulary of geometry — sides, corners (vertices), straight, curved — and begin to understand that shapes with the same number of sides belong to the same category. The real-world connection questions build the critical insight that geometry is everywhere around us.

How Parents and Homeschoolers Can Use This Worksheet

Walk through your home and point out shapes together before completing the worksheet. "Look — the window is a rectangle! The plate is a circle!" For the drawing section, let your child use crayons or markers to make it fun. After finishing, play a quick game: "I spy a shape with 4 equal sides... what is it?" This reinforces the vocabulary in a playful way.
